SACRED MUSIC

Picture
Resources for Learning Gloria XV

Thank you for your dedication to learning this chant! This music goes back to the 10th-11th centuries, and the text goes back to the 3rd century or earlier. Here are some recordings and tips that will help us join with the great many generations of Catholics who have sung this at Mass.

First, focus on the text. It is recommended to learn it section at a time. Here is a practice video of the spoken text:

Latin

Gloria in Excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax

hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te.

Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi

propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis,

Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe.

Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris.

Qui tollis peccata Mundi, miserere nobis.

Qui tollis peccata Mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram.

Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis.

Quoniam tu solus sanctus. Tu solus Dominus.

Tu solus altisimus, Jesu Christe.

Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

English

Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace

to men of good will. We praise thee. We bless thee.

We worship thee. We glorify Thee. We give thee thanks

for [because of] thy great glory. Lord God, King of Heaven,

God the Father Almighty. Lord God, only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of Father.

Who takest away sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Who takest away sins of the world, receive our supplication.

Who sits at the right hand of Father, have mercy on us.

For thou alone are holy. Thou alone are The Lord.

Thou alone are most high, Jesus Christ.

With the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Next, learn the melody. This will already be familiar, since it’s mostly the same as the English version we’ve been using at the Cathedral. To start, follow along with the recording on a neutral syllable like “doo” or “dah.” After it’s in your ear, the score will help provide visual cues for the contour of the melody:
