Pilgrims of Hope Jubilee in the Diocese of Rapid City
According to the Old Testament, a jubilee was to occur every fifty years as a special time of mercy. The Church celebrates a jubilee, or holy year, at least every 25 years as a time of prayer, pilgrimage, and pardon. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has proclaimed 2025 a Jubilee Year with the theme “Pilgrims of Hope.”
On Christmas Eve, Pope Francis opened the Jubilee at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. Locally, on Sunday, December 29, 2024, the Feast of the Holy Family, bishop scott bullock opened the Jubilee in the diocese of rapid city during the 10:30am Mass here at the cathedral. Faithful from all over the diocese were in attendance for this historic moment.

Throughout this Holy Year, a plenary indulgence in the usual form of the Church will be granted to all the faithful who are truly repentant and confess their sins sacramentally, receive Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and go on a pilgrimage visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of perpetual help.
With Pope Francis, we pray that this Jubilee Year will be “a moment of genuine encounter with the Lord Jesus…whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere, and to all as our hope.” The jubilee runs to January 6, 2026, the Feast Day of Epiphany, with the Closing of the Holy Door.
