The Edge: Middle School Student Ministry

We are looking for healthy adults who are interested in volunteer their time to be a part of the Edge Core Team. The Core Team impacts student's lives by investing in them as a Catholic mentor at our Wednesday night program.

Life Night:

Health Care Ministries
 

Hospital and Surgical Center Eucharistic Ministry
Visiting the sick is a corporal work of mercy. Extraordinary Ministers of Communion through prayer and Eucharist bring love, mercy, peace and the comfort of Christ to patients in the hospital and the surgery centers.

Hospital Ministry of Communion is coordinated by the Hospital Ministry Coordinator at Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help although members of the Ministers of Communion team come from various churches in Rapid City.

There may be a need for a volunteer to bring Eucharist on a specific day however the Coordinator will try to accommodate your availability. As a volunteer at Rapid City Regional hospital you are scheduled to visit once weekly or every-other-week and will visit patients over 2 to 2 1/2 hours per day. As a volunteer at one of the surgery centers you will visit several times a month since visits are scheduled only when a patient specifically requests a visit. Visits to either facility may be made in the morning, afternoon, or early evening

Homebound Eucharistic Ministry
Visiting a person who is homebound is a work of mercy and a way to bring the love of Christ and who is unable to be part of our church family at Mass.

As an Extraordinary Minister of Communion you may bring Eucharist to several persons who live in a facility, or persons in their own home. You visit weekly with the day and time of the visit determined by the person/facility and your availability. If you will be out of town or otherwise unavailable to serve, it may be possible for a substitute may serve in your absence.

Catholic Companionship

What:  Provide companionship to those who are alone
When:   Flexible schedule with the person you are visiting
Talent needed:   Comfortable meeting and being with people     
Provide companionship and build a relationship with those who are alone or have limited contact with family or friends.  Parishioners may choose to visit, read Scripture, do crafts, etc.  It is the family of God reaching out to other members of our parish family.

Card Ministry

What: Send cards to lonely or grieving parish members on holidays, birthdays and various other important occasions.
When: Throughout the year
Talent needed: Ability to write and mail cards
By sending a card, you can extend the hand of Christ to members of our parish who are lonely or grieving the loss of a loved one.

Assistant for Masses

What:  Assist at Masses in assisted living facilities and nursing homes
When:   One or more Monday or Wednesday mornings per month
Talent needed:   Desire to bring Mass and fellowship to those who cannot come to church
Visit with the residents and assist the priest by preparing the altar, reading scripture, distributing communion, etc.

Prayer Chain

What: Pray the intentions that are placed on the prayer chain.
How: You may receive intentions via telephone and pass the request to the next person; or you may receive intentions via email and without need to pass the intentions
When: Pray the intentions with your daily prayers, at Mass, during Adoration, etc.
Talent needed: A desire to help others during time of struggle with the greatest gift we can give! This is a ministry for everyone!

Health Ministry Volunteer Coordinator

What: Assist the Parish Nurse in locating volunteers to serve in various areas of Health Ministry
When: Variable
Talent needed: Ability to organize and communicate well with others

Health Screening Assistance

What: Assist with monthly blood pressure screenings and other health screenings
When: Various times throughout the year; screenings are usually held following Sunday Mass.
Talent needed: Registered nurses and LPNs

Minstry of Comfort (Grief) Team

What:  Support those who have lost a loved one through death during the first year of loss
When:  Throughout the year as needed and time allows
Talent needed:  Gifts of compassion and listening
Accompany and support those who have lost a loved one through sending cards, telephone contact, and visits. Training and ongoing support is provided.

Meal Ministry

What:  Provide an occasional meal to those in need
When:  Throughout the year as needed and time allows
Talent needed:  Ability to provide food and prepare a meal and, in some cases, deliver the meal
This is a service to families in our parish with health struggles or other difficult circumstances that prevent them from preparing meals.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

What:  Make shawls for those in need of God’s healing presence
When:  Ongoing throughout the year
Talent needed:  Ability to knit or crochet
The rhythmic motion of the needles calls the shawl maker to prayer and meditation.  The blessed shawls may be given to the lonely, those with chronic or terminal illness, or those who are grieving.

Liturgy

Ministers of Hospitality
What:  Provide a welcoming atmosphere for those who come to celebrate Mass
When:  Regularly scheduled at weekend Masses according to your preference and the need
Talent needed:  Willingness to be friendly, polite and courteous
Hospitality Ministers provide a welcoming atmosphere for those who come to celebrate Mass.  They assist in the collection, presentation of gifts, distribution of bulletins and other materials, and straightening up the church in preparation for the next liturgy.  This is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to become involved in a very important way in the liturgy. 

Altar Servers (open to parishioners 5th grade and older)

What:  Assist the priest and other ministers of the liturgy at daily and/or weekend Masses
When:  Regularly scheduled according to your preference and the need
Talent needed:  Willingness to serve, to learn, comfort in front of the community
Altar servers assist the priest and other ministers of the liturgy daily and on the weekend.  Masters of ceremonies are servers with some years of experience who assist the other servers in fulfilling their duties. This is an excellent opportunity for children and youth, couples and families to be involved in liturgical ministry. 

Lectors

What:  Proclaim the Scriptures at the weekend and/or daily Masses and other liturgical prayer services
When:  Regularly scheduled according to your preference and the need
Talent needed:  Love of the Scriptures, comfort in being in front of the community, willingness to understand what proclamation requires
This ministry requires a person to proclaim the Scripture readings with feeling and energy.  Any parishioner who is capable of effectively proclaiming the Scripture readings can apply for this ministry.  Lectors are needed for daily as well as weekend liturgies.

Extraordinary Ministers of Communion (open to confirmed members of the parish)

What:  Assist the priests and deacons in the distribution of Communion at weekend and/or daily Masses
When:  Regularly scheduled according to your preference and the need
Talent needed: Love of the Eucharist, comfort in being in front of the community, willingness to understand this ministry
Extraordinary Ministers of Communion are called to serve the parish and assist the priest and deacons in the distribution of Communion.  Extraordinary Ministers of Communion are needed for daily and weekend liturgies.

Sacristans

What:  Set up vessels and furnishings prior to weekend and/or daily Masses, clean vessels and put things away following Masses
When:  Regularly scheduled according to your preference and the need
Talent needed: Organizational ability, able to follow directions, flexibility
This “behind the scenes” ministry is a great service for those who like to be involved, but perhaps are not comfortable being out in front. It is an invaluable help to the priests, other ministers and the whole community. 

Church Decorators
What:  Decorate the church entryways, body of the church and sanctuary with signs and symbols marking certain feast days or liturgical seasons
When:  Various times throughout the year
Talent needed:  Gift for decorating and creativity
Volunteers could agree to decorate for a season or to decorate for a feast day.  Whatever time you could give would help to enhance and mark the various feasts and seasons of our liturgical year.

Candle Keepers

What:   Clean candle holders and replace candles in the church
When:  As needed and/or your schedule allows
Talent:  Desire to serve in the quiet of our church
This simple job provides a great service to our parish and to those who offer their prayers through this simple ritual of lighting a candle.  

Liturgical Laundry

What:   Wash and iron the altar cloths, corporals and purificators used for Masses
When:  Can be done for a week, a month, a given liturgy or whatever your time allows
Talent:  Able to wash and iron following specific instructions
Care must be taken to wash altar cloths and purificators used at mass and prepare them for the next use.  Training is provided. The linens can be collected at the church washed in your homes and returned.

Music

Cantors, Choir Members and Accompanists
What:  Help lead the music at weekend liturgies
When:  Various groups are regularly scheduled for specific Masses; cantors are regularly scheduled according to your preference and the need
Talent needed:  Ability to sing or play an instrument; comfortable in front of the community
Everyone can make music. However, there are those in our community who can lead music through singing or playing.  Cantors, choir members and accompanists are essential to an effective celebration.  If you have the gift to make music or if someone has told you that you sing or play well, consider sharing that gift.

Maintenance

 
 

Dusting Angels

What:  Dust the surfaces of the church and chapel
When:  Once a week after morning Mass or at another arranged time
Talent needed:  Able to move a mop and dust cloth and love of our Cathedral building
The Dusting Angels dust the floors and other surfaces of the church.  They clean windows and emptying the trash.  Following the cleaning, they will have coffee and donuts in the Parish Hall giving them an opportunity to socialize.  Serve the community and get to know your fellow parishioners.

Spring and Fall Rectory Cleaning

What:  A good cleaning of the rectory
When:  Once in the fall and in the spring
Talent needed:  Able to move furniture, climb ladders, deep cleaning and a care for our priests
Although there is a regular cleaning lady who attends to the daily needs of the rectory, once or twice a year we need to have a good general cleaning.  This is an opportunity for those who enjoy housework to offer some time to making the priests’ residence a pleasant place to live. 

Spring and Fall Cathedral Cleaning

What:  A good cleaning of the main church and chapel
When:  Once in the fall and in the spring
Talent needed:  Able to climb ladders, scrub and do deep cleaning and a pride in our church
A more intense cleaning twice during the year that would include dusting and washing of figures of Mary and the saints that are on the walls around the church, as well as cleaning higher and deeper. For those who can’t give weekly service but could come twice a year.

Meal Preparation

What:  Prepare a meal for committee meetings and other events that happen at the rectory
When:  Once a month for committee meetings, twice a year for Penance Services, occasionally for other events as needed  Those who love to cook could volunteer to come in and cook a meal for one of these events. This is an excellent opportunity for those of you who like to cook and would like the opportunity to prepare a meal for a larger number once in awhile. 

Set-Up Crews

What:  Setting up the Parish Hall for various parish gatherings
When:  Each of five crews would be available one day a week
Talent needed:  Able to move heavy tables, chairs, classroom partitions, vacuum
Each crew of five or six would come in the morning and create whatever set-up is needed for the Parish Hall for that day.  The length of time needed to create the various set-ups in the Parish Hall would depend on the group that is gathering.  No set-up crew would be required to work more than two hours.  This is a great opportunity to provide assistance to the many groups inside and outside of our parish who use our facilities.

Lawn Care

What:  Mow and trim the lawn
When:  As needed during the spring and summer
Talent needed:  Ride and push mower and weed eater operation and love of yard work
The parish provides the lawn mowers, gasoline and oil.  Those who volunteer to work on the lawn work out their own schedule.  This is a great opportunity for those who love the outdoors and would like an opportunity to help maintain the grounds around our beautiful Cathedral.

Gardeners

What:  Maintain the flower gardens and shrubs around the Cathedral
When:  As needed during the spring and summer
Talent needed:  Gardening skills and a love of gardening
This includes planting flowers in the spring and weeding the flowers through the summer, trimming hedges and decorative bushes around the Cathedral.  This is a great opportunity for those who like to work in the earth and create beauty in the landscaping of our property.

Finance Council

Talent needed:  Expertise, interest and/or talent with finances
This is an excellent opportunity for those with an interest in finances, to share your expertise and talent with the parish community.

Stewardship Committee

What:  Study stewardship and provide a plan for implementing stewardship in our parish
When:  second Monday of the month
Talent: An interest being a good stewards of the gifts God has given and a desire to live and share that vision 
The Stewardship Committee is a think tank, an a catalyst for promoting stewardship as a way of life in our parish.  This is an excellent opportunity for you to grow in gratitude for what God has given to you and to help our parish live and grow in that gratitude.

Building Committee

What:  Develop a maintenance plan for our facility and provide an ongoing monitoring system
When:  second Monday of the month
Talent needed:  Expertise and interest in the parish facility and its operation
An excellent opportunity to share your gifts in the area of construction, electrical, plumbing, engineering, etc. with the parish. The goal is to improve and keep our facility in good working order so as to serve our parishioners in the best way possible.

Liturgy Committee

What:  Prepare and review liturgies for various feasts and seasons
When:  second Monday of the month
Talent needed:  Love for and commitment to parish liturgical life and a willingness to share opinions, thoughts, feelings and concerns about the liturgy
The goal of the Liturgy Committee is to celebrate effective liturgies in our parish. We do this by our own study and growth in understanding and by sharing our experience of our liturgies and planning for subsequent liturgical celebrations.

Parish Council

What:  Provide vision and direction for the growth and development of our parish community and provide advice and counsel for the rector on a variety of issues.
When:  second Monday of the month
Talent needed:  Willingness to share one’s vision for the parish and collaborate with other parishioners in discussion and deliberation
The council consists of eight members who are elected at large from the parish community as well as representatives from the various parish committees and organizations.  Elections for the eight members at large are held in June of each year.  The term of office for the elected members is two years and parishioners can serve two consecutive terms.

Cathedral Family Groups

Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus, an independent service organization comprised mostly of Cathedral parishioners, provides a variety of services at the request of the rector, for the parish. They also provide fellowship and support for one another. 

Health Committee

This committee gives advice and direction to those working in the health care ministry of the Cathedral parish. Those in the health care field as well as interested parishioners can offer valuable insights into the growth and development of this ministry.
