Mission: “Do small things with great love”,
                      Blessed Mother Teresa, our patroness

What:  Health Ministry is a program of compassion that was established in May 2002 that follows the directive of Pope John Paul II, “show compassion toward all who are suffering.”  This program is designed to support spiritual health while we help meet physical, emotional, social needs

Who:  The Health Ministry team is made up of compassionate persons who desire to minister to those who suffer.  This team includes parishioners who share their gifts, Fr. John and Fr. Marcin who administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, and our parish nurse who coordinates needs of parishioners with services that can be provided within our parish family and within our community

How: Bringing Eucharist, offering prayer, visiting the lonely or those who have lost a loved one, sending greeting cards, knitting or crocheting prayer shawls, providing an occasional meal, and assisting in other ways to provide support and compassion

Talent needed: The desire to be the hands of Jesus in service to others

Hospital and Surgical Center Eucharistic Ministry:
At Rapid City Regional Hospital, Lay Ministers of Communion visit patients whose names are on the hospital’s Catholic visitation list.  Your name is on this list if you indicated on admission that you would like visits from your church.  At the surgical centers, Lay Ministers of Communion will visit if you ask the center staff to contact the Cathedral.  If you are a patient in the hospital or a surgical center and have not been visited by Lay Ministers of Communion, contact Fred Berendse, Coordinator, Cathedral rectory 342-0507, ext. 220.

Homebound Eucharistic Ministry:

If you are unable to attend weekend or weekday Masses and want to receive Communion at home or in a care facility, contact Judy Hasenohrl, RN, Parish Nurse, Cathedral rectory, 342-0507, ext. 205.

Anointing (Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick):
Long ago only those in danger of dying were anointed.  In more recent years this sacrament may be received by those who are seriously ill.  The Church offers these guidelines for those who may receive this sacrament:

Persons who have reached the age of reason (approximately age 4), who are experiencing a serious and potentially life threatening mental or physical illness such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, cancer; persons who will be receiving anesthesia that causes loss of unconscious (general anesthesia) including persons scheduled to have major surgery; and elderly persons who are in a weakened state due to advanced age.

If you are a parishioner and question whether you are a candidate to receive this sacrament or would like to receive this sacrament, contact a priest at Cathedral, 342-0507.

Prayer Chain:
We want to pray for you!  Our prayer chain is a group of people who are dedicated to praying for your intention.  One person receives your prayer intention and passes your intention person to person to more than 50 pray-ers.  If you need the powerful gift of prayer, call either Lee, 342-2569, or Joan, 721-0502 (you only need to call one person) to begin prayer for your intention.

Ministry of Comfort (grief ministry):
Have you suffered the loss of a loved one?  Do you need help with your grief?  Judy Hasenohrl, RN, Parish Nurse, Cathedral rectory, 342-0507, ext. 205.

Prayer Shawl Ministry:
If you or a loved one is ill, lonely, grieving or otherwise need a hug from God that the weight and warmth of a prayer shawl provides, contact Clare Madden, Coordinator, 343-5359.

Meal Ministry:
A meal can be a blessing for body and spirit!  Our meal ministry is able to provide meals on a short term basis.  If you are recently discharged from the hospital, having health struggles, have a newborn, or have other circumstances that make it difficult to prepare meals, contact Marge Kovarik, Coordinator, 342-1137.
