Baptism Preparation

Life Long Faith Formation / Baptism Preparation

Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation. Through baptism we become sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus and one another in the Church community. Baptism takes away original sin in infants and all sin in those who are older. Baptism class for parents of infants is offered once a month at the Cathedral. In this class, parents and godparents learn the meaning of baptism and the nature of the commitment that parents make on behalf of their children. This class is required for all new parents. If you have attended this class in the last three years and are currently active in the practice of the faith, you may not have to repeat the class again. Please call the rectory office if you have questions and to register. Children who have not been baptized and have reached the age of reason (7 years) are prepared for baptism through the RCIC process. Please call the rectory office for more information.

According to Church guidelines, godparents must be baptized, confirmed practicing Roman Catholics. Parents can select one or two godparents. If they select two, there must be one male and one female. If godparents live in Rapid City, they are asked to attend the baptism class with the parents or attend another class that is convenient for them. If the godparents live outside Rapid City, they are asked to contact their pastor to determine what their parish requires of them to become godparents. When they have completed the requirements of their parish, they are asked to have their pastor send a letter attesting to their readiness to be godparents to Fr. Mulloy.
